Free (software); from $50 (photobooks)
Momento has released a Mac-compatible version of its free software, Momento Pro, providing an end-to-end service for creating professional-looking photobooks, calendars and cards.
You start by choosing the photos you’d like to include in your project. When you launch the software it will open the Start View where you follow the steps to select the type of product you would like to create. Many sizes and finishes are available – including leather binding and frosted fly covers.
Next you can select the shape, size and layout style. The software will automatically create a design, or you can jump to Layout View to create or customise the design as you please. The different view options make it easy to edit, sort and adjust fine details.
You approach Momento in a different way to making Apple Picture Books, Cards or Calendars via iPhoto. Although there are many default settings available, Momento comes to life when producing customised books.
It includes many features you would use in layout programs like InDesign, and you also have the option to import your own Photoshop and InDesign files.
When you get to the point where you have perfected your project, the software provides you with a master PDF file for final proofing before submitting the book to print. Built into the software is an uploader section where you can upload the final PDF, select the print quantity and add other decorative finishing options – maybe a Nepalese clamshell box?
You pay for your photobook within the app. The production facility is in Sydney, providing a fast turnaround.
Momento Pro is on the pricey side compared to books such as those from iPhoto. However, the quality, customisability and little extras you can add make a difference.
