App Guide

There are any number of apps that let you search for nearby businesses but Localscope offers two neat twists: Aggregation and augmented reality. Unfortunately, the execution falls a bit short.

Rather than offer up its own list of establishments, Localscope pulls data from Google, Bing, Foursquare, Twitter and Wikimapia. (You view the list offered by each service separately.)

As for the augmented reality feature, you can point your phone at a business and the app will give you the name and phone number. But this seemed buggy in our tests.

Localscope lets you bookmark favourite searches and results, and it’s easy to share locations via SMS, email, Twitter or Facebook.

There are a lot of good ideas in Localscope. Some day – soon, hopefully – the app will live up to its promise.

All very cool this augmented reality, but wouldn’t it be easier to just look at the shop’s sign to find out what it’s name is? And why look up the phone number if I can just walk into the shop and have a chat to the sales guys?
